  1. I don't understand the comparison. Do you think that ancient warbands would just let women and children be because they are non-combatants? In that sense, of course total war is worse, but it's far more precise than pagan idiocy. Rationalism is bad, but the idea that it's somehow inferior to pagan lunacy is a stretch. The idea of non-combatant is a recent one, and I'd say that it is inherently rationalistic. An ancient person would see a woman as an opportunity.
