Thank you for your story and your service! I believe we lost in Vietnam and Afghanistan because the US didn't provide the locals with any reasons to support us. The South Vietnamese government was still mostly made up of the same corrupt aristocrats from the French-puppet monarchy. The Afghan government was notoriously corrupt and incompetent. By comparison, the US was very successful in South Korea, Japan and the Philippines. You need the support of the locals or no matter how successful your combat operations, you will fail. That's just my theory from studying history.
