She's off the coast, but in about 13,000 feet of water. And Paul Allen's Petrel has been tied up since his death. She was around 60 miles offshore, so outside territorial waters but within the EEZ.

The new sidebars highlight just how short her "active" career was - but leave out how long it took to build her. She spent more time on the ways than in the water!

There is a deep trench off the coast of Japan. She is probably about 13,000 feet deep. And the Petrel has been laid up since Paul Allen died.

They were desperate for more carriers after Midway, and may have had a bottleneck in armor production as well.

There's only one or two made public, so kinda hard...

Have not seen much, but he was commander of the destroyer at Midway that escorted and assisted the Hiryu when she was hit. His older brother was the commander of the first Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, wounded aboard Hiei, which was scuttled later after air attacks.

The IJN was noted for deception and mis-direction, note the elaborate concealment of the Yamato's size and main armament. Your proposal does make some sense. Then again, after the war they were pretty forthcoming, after all the documents were burned.

I think she only had three, and her captain suspected the sub showed herself to drive him towards another one nearby.

That hull form was designed for 28 kts. If you want it to go faster you have to add a lot of horsepower, but a hull redesign would help too.

It is in about 13,000 feet of water in a deep trench off the southern Japanese coast within the 200 mile EEZ. I don't think the Chinese wreckers work that deep.

The rough estimate I've seen is 1/3 to the Pacific and 2/3 to the Atlantic/Europe. Hardly "every bit of American power". It was a majority of the USN, but not the USA (Army) or USAAF (Army Air Force). There was an Atlantic fleet (that King neglected, see Operation Drumbeat), there was the invasion of North Africa, the invasion of Sicily, and the invasion and operations in Italy, not to mention Normandy. Plus the 8th and 15th Air Forces. The only big thing the Pacific got priority for was the B-29s, but that was due to longer range needed. And you might say the USN was just coasting in 1945...

@bkjeong4302 My understanding was that there were separate fleets of landing ships, not shared between Atlantic and Pacific. The big issue for spring of 44 was Med vs. Normandy. The support for the push in Italy was cut way back, and the proposed landing in southern France was postponed, in order to direct more shipping towards Normandy, especially LSTs after the mid-June storm that wrecked the Omaha Mulberry harbor. Also the longer it took to get Cherbourg in operation as a full port, the longer Normandy needed beach-landing ships like LSTs. Luckily they could be loaded nearby in England and steamed across the Channel in only one day.

There is a deep trench off the southern Japanese coast. She rests in about 13,000 feet of water. Need a deep-sea ROV to find her. And Paul Allen's Petrel has been laid up since his death.

She is in about 13,000 feet of water in a trench off the coast in an area designated as a sealife refuge. Plus she is a war grave.

Sure, that shallow you can send divers down to patch and remove any dangerous materials (if needed). Water and weather conditions could make it more difficult, but could be overcome. What matters is will and finance.
