Another factor would be chance of grounding, particularly a ship as large as Yamato. The Kaga grounded in the Indies early in '42, and had to go back to Japan for repairs. The South Dakota grounded outside Esprito Santo (or Noumea?), so even waters near ports were not well charted. I remember reading about the Missouri grounding - that was near Chesapeake Bay, which is fairly well charted, and it took them two weeks to free her.

With an RV you can swap drivers with just a gas stop, but realize that rental RVs often charge by the mile.

You still need to get IN during darkness, or suffer the fate of getting seriously damaged on the run in and not having a retreat option.

A rental RV from some place like CruiseAmerica could be returned on opposite coast for extra fee, but RVshare would have to be returned to origin or hire someone to drive it back.

Colorado and Maryland were available in the fall too.

Second. If routes could vary, might be better to start the trip in the South, before it really warms up, then move northward. Or start out west in southern CA, then take I-10 across to Houston/New Orleans area, then cross to FLA and up the east coast.

In the US we have a lot of RV parks outside of cities and near state parks, plus most Walmarts will let you park overnight away from the main entrance.

Weather and proximity to oil were two big features; San Francisco was an older port, but often foggy and colder, while Seattle was also colder and rainier. But the biggest drydock on the west coast was at Bremerton.

Give them a break, they are probably hiring a lot of illegals to rip out all those 1960s toxins...

San Diego was the homeport, but repairs were done at Mare Island or Puget Sound.

A couple of the Kongos plus the Yamatos were in Truk late 42 into early 43, but only the Kongos were sent down the Slot due to their speed.
