  2. It certainly did not work well for a ship that needs to be able to go in any direction at any time - like a warship. Using wind can be adapted to if you are creative with routing and timing, following trade winds during different times of year for example, but not in our "on demand" economic system. A hybrid system could be investigated, but the question is whether the weight and drag costs of having both is worth any efficiencies gained.
