Why is it called "point blank" for range? If you leave a rangefinder setting blank, does it default to 0?

@WandererRTF Also the issue with getting Luftwaffe air cover over Baltic convoys, whether they are naval shipping, army shipping, or "civilian". Goering had "more important things to do..."

Yeah, unfortunately the Luftwaffe had better things to do...

Some WWII USN oilers were named after rivers that had Native American names, and some tugboats were named after Native American tribes. Naming things has gotten so political, the newer supply ships are being named for "civil rights leaders" and "industrialists and shipbuilders".

Was the Prince of Wales using fire-control radar at that point?

@richardmalcolm1457 Before Coral Sea does not make sense - we had not lost anything yet. After Coral and before Midway, yes we were down Lexington and the Yorktown was badly damaged and limping home.

@greg_mca The question they would be, "What are you covering the South Pacific against? The Kido Butai is heading for Midway, and the 5th Div is laid up."

Well, depending on refueling/resupplying status, there could be 8-10 USN and 3-5 RN and maybe even the FN Richelieu, all with pretty good radar and tied together in one communications net. A circling approach of darting in from opposite sides and using radar-directed shooting at long range could prevent any of them from getting badly hit while they whittle down the two Yamatos.
