@alanhughes6753 I believe Drach did comment in a previous Drydock that the Titanic would have been better off ramming head-on than trying to turn and scraping along the side. It was the length of the gash that overwhelmed multiple watertight bulkheads and led to a fast sinking.

Might have something to do with river velocity due to length of stream and gradient too.

They also ran into the problem of trying to pry four-engine planes away from Bomber Harris for long-range patrol. Just two or three squadrons could have closed the mid-ocean gap.

@calvingreene90 The difficulty in switching is that they would have to re-tool the production line and retrain the workers, losing up to a year. Then there's the possibility that the RAF might declare "emergency" and take over the output for homeland defense.

Might not be a fair comparison, as "first flight" is just the beginning of the real development work, when you test out the paper design; Initial Operational Capability is the better metric.

True, but the Lancaster could take an A-bomb unmodified, while the B-29 had to have special modifications. Hap Arnold was about to eat his hat and ask for the Brits to loan him some Lancasters when they successfully tested the modified B-29s.

At least that to fit a carrier; do they have a container port there?
