One large dose of criticism really goes to the IJN love for "distant cover" where forces are scattered about and take hours to come up in support if needed (like Java Sea or Midway). Judging by the way junior initiative was stifled at Etajima and in non-com positions, I suspect there was no IJN counterpart to Newport and the Fleet Problems where the USN allowed junior officers to criticize seniors in the after-action reports.

Those are Japanese, where they put the division number on the bow.

@SuperRootUser I thought it was Hoover on the Helena that decided not to stop for the Juneau. Halsey relieved Hoover because of it, but later regretted it. Hoover tried to pass the word via a B-17 but it got lost in the relay.

@hammer1349 Well, there is night naval combat, which the USN thought they could do but got schooled by the IJN, and night air combat, which both were trying to ignore (although the IJN used shipborne floatplanes at night to find and drop flares on enemy ships and the USN had the Black Cats) but got schooled by the RN. The USN thought radar would fix everything but learned the hard way about realistic training; the IJN thought beta carotene and giant binocs were good enough but learned the hard way that having the best torpedoes doesn't help if the other guy learns you keep repeating the same tactics.

There were a couple operating in the Fiji/Samoa area, like the Colorado and one or two of the New Mexicos during the fall of '42. They were often escorting troop convoys.

That and their too-slow, too-few training pipeline...

Check out "Lonely Vigil" by Walter Lord.

@adenkyramud5005 He let safety in ammo handling slip in the interests of speed. Port Chicago was a massive ammo explosion at the docks. He blamed the workers, but you get what you enforce. He didn't.

The link was to the music file "NCM Epic Music", but it has been taken down hence the 404. Try googling.

Halsey? Turner? It seems Nimitz let King handle the bigger issues with MacArthur, judging by his buck-passing, but he seemed to get along with him when they met face-to-face. There was NO way the USN would let MacArthur, an Army guy, dominate the Pacific campaign, which was a Navy game. Also, MacArthur was political football, since he was a darling of the Republicans and pretending not to be interested in 1944.

There's a 1987 book called "Shinano!" by the captain of the sub that sank her (Enright) that is pretty good, and vey cheap second-hand.

I think you mean CV-6(N), as the other way around would make her the first nuke carrier in 1943.

"... isn't French. It's Vermont." Is Vermont a language? Oh, you mean it is IN Vermont. The state. In New England...

He was replaced by Halsey on October 18th.

Does Wake Island (first pass) count?

The USN promoted the leaders who learned something at Guadalcanal; the IJN sidelined the leaders who learned something at Guadalcanal.

Americans have a history of "under-performing" in our first offensives. We learn from our mistakes, and the better ones go on to command. Remember Grant and Sherman?
