They came out of the Navy of the '30s, which prioritized penny-pinching and career preservation - but yet still birthed leaders like Nimitz, Spruance, King, Halsey...

The first week was the best, after that the fresh stuff is gone and they start opening cans...

@AsbestosMuffins And then there was the depth keeping malfunctions. In engineering, a single problem is easy to find and fix, a double problem is harder as one can mask or be mistaken for the other problem, but a TRIPLE problem is little suspected and way more harder to find and fix. Kudos to Lockwood and the captains that ignored the brass and the bureaucrats to find them all.

A builder named Higgins managed to get BuShips investigated by Harry Truman during the war, but the torpedo "issue" was Top Secret so they could not talk about it publicly.

@ethanhatcher5533 If you think about it, they have the rope, the wood, and the masts or deckheads to act as cranes. All they need is some calmer water and a bit of time - not during action, but I've read of guns being remounted during a lull or temporary withdrawal from battle.

Japanese subs were a part of the main Kantai Kessen strategy - the outermost ring. They were primarily a scouting force, and were tasked with helping to "whittle down" the battle line if they could get in position for a shot. They would pass up merchant or small escort targets in order to preserve their ordinance for "big fish". They did have some successes - the Saratoga, the Yorktown, the Wasp, the Saratoga again, the North Carolina. At Midway they formed two long scouting lines that were supposed to spot and interdict the carriers when they sortied from Pearl Harbor - but they had already passed before they got on station. For a long time the USN blamed the cruiser losses around Guadalcanal on night-fighting IJN subs. One other note - Eta Jima naval academy graduates were selected first for battleships, then cruisers, then destroyers, then air units, and then last for submarines.
