You probably do not set the courses (the lower rack of sails) if the boilers are blowing smoke...

@TheJudge2017 It was mostly up to the subs to stay out of the way of friendly forces; there was no underwater IFF. Subs patrolled around enemy harbors and choke points in enemy territory; on their way to and fro they sometimes got spotted by friendly aircraft and so they dived to prevent blue-on-blue attacks. When approaching port they would often be met and escorted in by one of the yard/port vessels. That's why USS Ward attacked on December 7th - no friendly sub would have been submerged just off the Pearl entrance. Subs were also assigned non-overlapping patrol zones to try to prevent sub-blue-on-blue.

@alexanderhartmann7950 For one thing, American ships would not have needed such range and endurance, so they could ship even more secondary guns...

@USS_Grey_Ghost That was a story told about the Japan Occupation Forces right after the surrender. A lot of Japanese officers deserted their posts, and a lot of records were deliberately destroyed (or burned up in air raids), so the troops coming to occupy were often discovering things they had no intel or previous warning about.
