Yes, make track staff use their own vehicles to get to site instead of company vehicles. No travelling time, no fuel allowance, no insurance hikes and servicing paid for. Don’t have a car? Goodbye job. Reduce track and safety inspections. Reduce pensions. Make mainline drivers and others work up to 39 weekends every year for an 8% pay cut. Of course you would agree wouldn’t you?

Track staff book on at a particular location or depot they are then taken to a site of work in a crew van usually with a toilet and water on board but no doubt you'd begrudge them that as well Hugh. As for drivers and what they earn it sounds like you are another jealous private sector worker whose idea of the job is what the Daily Mail tells him. No doubt getting every weekend off and sitting behind a desk 9to5. Did you get furlough as well ? 12 million office and bank staff sitting at home all day watching Netflix. Brain surgeons earn 6 figures so why on earth are you comparing a train drivers money to that of a totally different job?

There’s far too many management on the railway. The CEO earns in excess of 500k plus bonuses. Maybe he should be sharing that with the men and women who get up in all weathers and work all hours to keep the wheels turning! The railway should never ever been handed over to private companies. Should be state owned 100% and paid for by taxpayers.
