  6.  @boredphysicist  That's France fella. Auto running has been on a few underground lines for years. You still need a driver for operational problems and defect handling. Driverless trains are probably about 30 years away.

  8.  @antonmsk3401  Well, when I drove a train I was only responsible for the running of that one train. If a signal failure occurred that wasn't my fault but equipment failure. Same went for someone jumping in front of me. I expect you're the type of person that sees a uniform and blames them for everything. Must be amazing being so perfect.

  9. Thanks for the hard work you do Carl but guess which section of society has consistently voted in Parliament against giving you people a decent pay rise? Train drivers earn 60k plus not 50 as you mention. If you want train drivers money the simple answer is to apply, pass the interviews/ tests/ route knowledge/ and stock training and become a train driver. Otherwise you need to stop comparing and join a union.

  10.  @martingibbons7070  You need to take your wages up with your union rep. Unfortunately when the bus companies got split years back you were always going to get screwed. What you can't do is compare a bus driver to a train driver which is much more involved.

  14.  @ctb1977  I agree industry standards dictate what rail staff are paid. They are entitled like everyone else to a pay rise however. Not anyone can jump on the front and drive a train hence why the money is reasonable. The rail companies cannot say they can't afford it when they are paying the CEO 600k a year and are making huge profits on the backs of the rail workers that are currently striking. Most people complain about drivers salaries because they are jealous , one of them having strong unions and two because they have been brainwashed by the RW media for over a decade. And I'm in full agreement that people like nurses and teachers ( i have both in my family ) should be paid more but that lays with a tory government and not the fault of rail workers. That is a broken record.

  17.  @lol-pz1ni  Slight contradiction in your post lol as you've said you aren't against people striking but think that rail staff are holding the country to ransom! You need to make your mind up. How do you think workers today gained protection against discrimination, paid holidays, pensions, contractual hours, etc It was because of unions like RMT and ASLEF sticking up for their workers. A lot of comments regarding train drivers as unskilled when they couldn't be more further from the truth, one reason it takes so long to fully qualify, hence the reason why they are paid a decent wage.

  18.  @lol-pz1ni  The reason that people are on minimum wage is because they work zero hour contracts and jobs where wages have been kept historically low by the tories. I wouldn't expect someone with the responsibility of a train driver to be on minimum wage. Shall we have a race to the bottom to suit you? Do you work? If so do you get weekends off? Annual leave? Anti discrimination laws? Etc etc. Where do you think those benefits came from?

  41. Why is the union greedy for asking for a pay rise that matches inflation? Anything less is a pay cut. Lots of other reasons why they balloted for action as well, and why do you think the rail workers don't do their jobs properly?

I was really lazy for 33 years when I got up at 2.30am in all weather's to drive 50 miles to work then drive a train for 8hrs 45. The constant easiness of people throwing themselves in front of my train took its toll. I no longer do that anymore as I moved to Skiathos to drink rum in the sun every day. Happy October when your beloved tory party sends you a 4k gas bill. You can go outside at 8pm and clap yourself to keep warm.
