  1. I think sometimes synthetic oil makes an old worn engine too clean and actually messes it up because carbon build up and sludge help maintain internal oil pressure.

  2. Very warn old engines need sludge to block leaks and maintain oil pressure. Sometimes cleaning out sludge can destroy an old worn engine.

  3. jothain Happened to me many years ago. I had an old dirty car engine and after putting in new clean oil, it hardly could run and all sorts of mechanical noises. I used a heavy oil additive for old engines and the engine worked better again. It could have been many things like the guides around valves, worn rings, worn bearings, worn oil pump, etc.

  4. Keep doing what you're doing as long as it works. A switch could be fatal to an old high mileage engine.
