The difference is that Rome never pretended it was any other way.

That is an enormously important point when it comes to Hitler. It's not that Hitler was insane, it's that Hitler and Nazism were irrational and romantic as an ideology. Hitler believed that war was an end in itself, that it would improve the nation and people like tempering improves a blade. Rational calculations may have influenced his decisions on what wars to fight and when to fight them, but that there would be a d-over of WW1 was inevitable from the moment Hitler took power, unless he could be removed from power before he got to start it.

You are correct about inflation - the rise in prices is not inflation, it is an effect OF inflation. Inflation is an expansion of the money supply without or in excess of a corresponding expansion in the supply of goods and services produced by society and available to the market. There are other processes that can also cause prices to rise, but a rise in prices cannot in itself cause an expansion of the money supply. Inflation coupled with deficit spending does indeed serve as an invisible tax on all of the private sector. Instead of taking dollars from individuals and businesses, it reduces the value of every dollar they earn or hold and turns the missing value into new money it can borrow and spend.

There probably wouldn't have been much of a war because the German generals would have removed Hitler from power. After Munich they no longer felt they had the ability to do it.

I mean, by spring of 1945 he was a druggy-madman, but that was almost a different world from 1939.

Silly little boys don't seem to understand that a movie is not real life.
