@koini11 'I remember people doing stupid things like putting fibre board over lovely Victorian doors because they wanted it to look 'modern' Barry Bucknell, if I recall correctly?

You also have Haida.

@Chris-m-m02 Don't even mention the total lack of support from various British 'governments' for the campaign to bring HMS Whimbrel back from Egypt and make her the centre of a Battle of the Atlantic museum in Liverpool.

The late Sir John Betjeman would have preferred Slough to have been the target!

If playing a major role in the destruction of a regime led by a gang of psychopathic murderers intent upon world domination is 'losing' then so be it.

More relevantly, could Belfast be used to fire 6 inch HE shells at the Houses of Parliament. Poor old Guy Fawkes failed, but who would object to the removal from the planet of so disreputable a gang of freeloaders?

It is odd that the class seem to be known as 'Towns' given that every one was named after a city. At the time, when introduced into the RN from the late 1930s, they were generally known as 'Southamptons.'

I believe that she was responsible for recent cuts in the Royal Navy. The former Prime Minister David Camoron (not a spelling mistake, by the way) once complained that the Royal Navy must have more ships than necessary, as 'that big one near Tower Bridge never seems to go anywhere.' Only joking. I think!

Just to be really, really, pedantic, these ships were originally known as the 'Southampton' Class. 'Towns' was never appropriate anyway, as they were all named after cities. Don't shoot! Please don't shoot!

Or, if not The Old Lady, then Sheffield.

'USS Salem.' Don't you mean the Graf Spee?
1
Indeed. Isn't it odd that the Russians have always acknowledged the role of the Royal & Merchant Navies in the Arctic, whereas succeeding British governments never really have?
1
Well, Britain has Mary Rose (or, at least, parts thereof), Victory, and Warrior. But you are right, the Old Lady would have completed the set.

Given the current size of the Royal Navy, she might have to be! Possibly with HMS Cavalier as escort.
