There was a book written in 1960 called 'The Phantom Fleet' which tells the story of the dummy warships. The were originally known as Force W, and consisted of three merchantmen altered by Harland & Wolff to look like 2 Rs and Hermes. The ships, known as Fleet Tenders, were the Pakeha (built 1910), Mamari (1911) & Waimana (1911). They displaced around 7900 tons, and were 477 feet long. The 'battleships' were built to 5/6 scale of the originals. I believe that the Force was disbanded in May, 1941, and the ships returned to merchant service. If you search for 'Dummy Battleships in WW2' there is a photograph of them in Scapa Flow, and to be honest they do look quite convincing, at least from a distance.

Resolution was fitted with Type 279 (Air Warning) & Type 285 (Anti-Aircraft) in 1941, followed by 273 (Surface Search) and 284 (Main Gunnery) by mid 1942

@chooseyouhandle Then try reading about British submarines in the Mediterranean, then. As to ' hearing about allied submarines in the pacific: rare' Seriously? Do you not know what the US Submarine fleet actually did to the Japanese in the Pacific?

The R Class didn't receive much in the way of modernisation, largely because of their low speed and smaller size when compared to the QEs. The modernised Italian ships, with their light armour and weak broadsides, needed their increased speed to avoid action.

In the Pacific, yes. Carriers were still the support act for the main battleship feature in the west.
