Before the war, the Royal Navy went to considerable trouble fitting capital ships and cruisers with spotter aircraft. During the war, they went to almost as much trouble removing them. This wasn't restricted to the RN of course.

There were agreed limitations for the total aircraft carrier tonnage. Both Britain and the US were restricted to 135,000 tons. The RN's pre-war carrier fleet was already around 115,000 tons. I would, however, have preferred keeping Tiger in lieu of one of the Rs. The Rs were permanently bedevilled by their lack of speed, whereas a modernised Tiger could perhaps have played a similar role to that of Renown, as a fast carrier escort. Just a fantasy on my part, of course. It takes my mind off watching the England opening batsmen in the current Ashes series!

Isn't it an accurate assessment, though? It is marvellous that she still exists, but by WW2 she was, rather like the British R class, no longer fit for front line duties.

@nekomakhea9440 Exactly. She was used as a bombardment vessel, like the British R class battleships. She was, like them, no longer able to serve with the main fleets in naval actions.

@nekomakhea9440 Texas was capable of 20 knots after her mid 1920s refit. first line service for US Battleships in WW2 generally involved accompanying Carriers as part of Fast Task Forces. The older US battleships were simply not capable of that. Put simply, the New Yorks were two of the oldest battleships in the US Navy in WW2. Like the British R class, they were restricted to shore bombardment which, however worthy, dangerous, and important, was not the raison d'etre of a battleship.
