@9eleven1877 Indeed. Didn't something similar happen at the Battle of Philippi in 42 B.C.? Brutus was doing quite well against Octavian and Antony, until Cassius offered him a plate of Steak Pudding and chips, thus distracting him at a critical moment. Sorry, I appreciate that some people actually take tennis seriously, however odd the concept might be to many of us.

@Spartan-oj9dc What is really despicable is the manner in which Harry Markle and his keeper deliberate made his grandparents' twilight years miserable.
15
Isn't this somewhat akin to White Star line announcing on 17 April, 1912 that Titanic's condition had 'stabilised.'
15
@junescoular292 Apparently the book will include at least 20 pages of pictures. And a pack of felt-tip pens with which to colour (color?) them in.

@diannemorris8690 Many years ago, the writer George Orwell wrote this of 1930s Britain. It certainly still applies, and now seems to have extended to the great nation formerly known as the United States of America :- ‘England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box. All through the critical years many left-wingers were chipping away at English morale, trying to spread an outlook that was sometimes squashily pacifist, sometimes violently pro-Russian, but always anti-British’.

Isn't the reality more mundane? These 'commentators' and 'academics' cocooned in their conviction that they are the leaders of popular thought, have been horrified to observe the outpouring of grief, or at least respect, emanating from the vast majority of ordinary people, and the subsequent realisation that they are, in reality, a tiny, self-regarding, minority has alarmed them. Hence, the need to comfort themselves by making increasingly bizarre and extreme commernts.
15
The most amusing part was that he initially began nodding agreement, until it slowly dawned on him what she was actually saying.
14
As a Briton, I also wish that British settlers had never landed in Australia. If you lot hadn't taken up cricket, I would never have misjudged a bouncer from a very quick Aussie professional in a club game a few years ago, and lost four front teeth as a result. Mind you, I would probably have been equally capable of misjudging a similar delivery from a West Indian or South African instead. My ineptitude as an opening bat knew no limits!
14
Is there some rule in the United States, of which a foreigner like myself may be unaware, that senior politicians in the Democrat party must be either incoherent, mentally impaired, or both?
14
Anyone remember the 'My Lovely Horse' episode of 'Father Ted' where the organisers are desperate to ensure that Ireland doesn't win, and thus pick the worst possible entry? It seems that the BBC took it as their inspiration.
14
For those who saw Blackadder III, I swear his personality is modelled on that of the Prince Regent, as played by Hugh Laurie.
14
Grossly unfair to describe her as a 'lightweight.' Many real lightweights will take offence at being compared to her.
14
@lechatel So long as it isn't to Britain. We have troubles enough.
14
In a comedy series called 'Father Ted' there was an individual acclaimed to be 'The priest with the most boring voice in all of Ireland.' He didn't come close to the Dear Leader, however.
14
How odd that the President of Brazil has a better grasp of English than the President of the United States. Mind you, I think my cat could run Biden close.
13
@@youtubemusic1790 Someone who is entitled to an opinion, perhaps?
13
@Spartan-oj9dc So was every ex serviceman & woman in the UK. They however, are not permitted to wear uniform.
13
Isn't it odd that few, if any, transgender women demand the right to compete in mens boxing?
13
The BBC at the time said that the Markles received a warm reception.
13
Showing the clips from 2020, where Biden seems both coherent and rational, only shows, when compared with the Biden of today, how much his mental state has deteriorated.
13
Shouldn't the band have played 'Liberty Bell?' That was the Monty Python theme tune, wasn't it?
13
@deankruse2891 You must be from the US? I suspect that you are not fully aware of the true condition of the EU & Britain. A true ally is one who tells those with whom he is allied when he believes they are making mistakes. Moreover, the vast majority of we 'lower orders' in Europe do, I believe, think that what Mr. Vance said had considerable merit.
13
@karenboden2560 Isn't it more disrespectful to allow people with these advantages to beat up women boxers in pursuit of underserved prizes?
13
Of course not. They got precisely the sort of response they (or rather their leaders) desired,
13
@thatotlhowe 'Clearly?' The Royal Family were more intent upon ignoring them than attacking them.
13
@cerovk6000 You think that these images are restricted to one channel? If anyone is being silly, it is you.
13
@stilllearning1160 I rather expected her and her 'people' to turn up in Sweden today. Surely, a good photo op for her?
12
'Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain.' Friedrich Schiller
12
Actually, for part of the time he looks almost only vaguely aware of where he actually is.
12
How dare you insult the Dear Leader? You will be taken to a Kangaroo Court, where a tame Judge will impose upon you whatever sentence the Leader decides is appropriate.
12
I wonder if Mr. Campbell feels any guilt about the removal of Dr. Kelly, or does he simply believe that doing the bidding of his master excused him of responsibility?
12
@Lee-kg7ze Perhaps you don't grasp the concept of sarcasm?
12
Poor lass! Imagine turning up at a prestigious event in a second-hand frock?
12
@robertoNcognito Perhaps the earth is flat, as well?
11
@kevwiz369 It does seem odd that Azeem Rafiq's memory was considerably sharpened when his contract with Yorkshire ended. I notice, also, that Michael Holding is on Vaughan's case. Equally odd that he was happy to sit in the commentary box with him for years.
11
You do understand how any university debate, and particularly one involving the Oxford Union, supposedly the intellectual elite of the next generation, should be conducted? Clearly not. I suggest that the Speaker does not need a safe space, as he, unlike the banshees opposite him, emerged with considerable dignity.
11
@englishciderlover7347 Wasn't the statement something along the line that Caribbean immigration helped to make Britain the society it is today? If so, that is capable of more than one interpretation.
11
@shezza2191 If by 'we' you mean 'maori' then presumably you would not extend rights to European settlers? By extension, I assume you would also discard European medicine, science, and education? Or would you simply choose to retain the benefits of western culture, whilst bleating incessantly about it?
11
Frankly, if Harvard feel the need to appoint another Black Woman as President, I think I have just seen Mr. Murray interviewing an excellent candidate.
11
@Bobblers07 Netflix must be getting twitchy if this is the quality of her produce.
11
'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.' Attributed to either Abraham Lincoln or Mark Twain. Having watched Harris deliver her comments, it appears that she likes to say 'work together' a lot.
10
I also come from the UK. We are not permitted to be patriotic any more. We are told that patriotism & right wing extremism are the same thing.
10
@turnerfamilyinozi Largely because the colour of the constructors (actually, Stonehenge was built in several phases over hundreds of years) was never an issue, of course. Have you heard of Aristotle? A maxim attributed to him says :- 'Give me a child until he is 7 and I will show you the man.' Teachers are using books of this sort to indoctrinate children at nursery & primary schools. That is why people should care.
10
I have one of my old cricket bats (a Gunn & Moore Maestro, cracked years ago when I, for once, managed to middle one of my shots) by the door. I wonder if this intellectual giant would have thought it quite such a prank if I had used it on him had he entered my house. I would, of course, have rolled my wrists first, to keep the shot down. I wouldn't, of course, have used a new bat. Far too expensive to replace!
10
What have elementary school children done to upset you? They don't deserve that.
10
@Blue You think that the Queen had any involvement in 'colonisation?' Indeed, have you any idea of what colonialism actually involved? I assume you are from the United States? If European settlers had never reached the Americas, what would the New World have looked like today? A largely agrarian land, sparsely occupied by peoples with a neolithic level of culture, science, and society. I assume you benefit from the results of the colonialism you affect to detest? You are clearly a hypocrite. Or perhaps simply an ignoramus?
10
But his career within the BBC is absolutely secure.
10
Perhaps Mr. Biden keeps dialling the wrong number?
9
Isn't it fortunate that, when the alleged text from William arrived, a Netflix cameraman just happened to be filming? Does anyone really believe, by the way, that William would be stupid enough to send something to the Markles which they could later use against him?
9
Remarkable! Probably the least sincere and most contemptuous 'tribute' since our very own Tony Blair used to refer to any British lieutenants killed in action in one of his wars as 'lootenants' in the House of Commons. By the way, is it my mistake, or do her eyes look 'odd?'
