I assume you mean the convoys between the Firth of Forth and the Thames, down the British East Coast, the FS (Forth South) and FN (Forth North) series. These operated from 1939 -1945, and there were 3584 of them, totalling 104,792 merchantmen. There were 178 merchantmen lost in convoy, 10 lost when straggling, and 15 lost out of convoy. The escort was generally comprised of V & W 'Wairs' supported by an armed trawler or two.

I take it that you haven't heard of the Railway Executive Committee, which actually controlled railway operations in both WW1 & WW2? The railways were heavily degraded during WW1, hence the Grouping into four large companies in 1923, and were in steady decline between the wars as a result of serious loss of freight traffic to the road industries following the release of large quantities of lorries for civilian use from 1919 onwards. They were not making profits which would have enabled them to re-invest.
