  1.  @KILLER.KNIGHT  HS2 is a passenger only line. Building something in the 2020s and 2030s which might have been a good idea in the 1990s really is not wisdom. The alternative, of re-opening the old Great Central line as a freight & passenger line with the same standards of the current west & east coast mail lines, thus relieving the pressure on both at a fraction of the cost, seems never to have been considered. In short, is it really worth spending over £100 billion in order to get from London to Birmingham twenty minutes quicker in ten years' time?

  2. No. HS2 was first proposed in January 2009. One Gordon Brown was Prime Minister at the time. When it was confirmed in 2012, a certain David Cameron was Prime Minister. Johnson did not become PM until July, 2019.
