History doesn't repeat itself, but it tends to rhyme. How many times before has the U.S. tried to warn allies (especially European) about the ill intentions of looming enemies, and not been taken seriously until it is painfully obvious? France WILL recognize the error of its ways on China eventually, but only when it is late in the game. They won't take the lead. At this point, given the history, I expect little else. But of course, being French, the one thing they will NEVER do is belatedly admit that the U.S. was right, and that it should have listened.

For doing what, exactly? Continuing to brown-nose the Chinese? I'd call that utter short-sighted stupidity.

Is that why France, initially reluctant to show strong support, is now one of the countrries sending some of the most significant amounts of aid to Ukraine? I think you have it backwards, komrade.

@antihypocrisy8978 Sarcasm all you want, and I never agreed with that war anyway. That was then, this is now. Pick your side and live with the consequences. If you prefer autocracy and being a servant of China, be my guest.

@antihypocrisy8978 Well, the most obvious one would be Russia, to use a current example. Despite years of U.S. warnings that exactly this sort of thing was likely to happen, most of the EU countries (incl. France) didn't take it seriously, didn't properly invest in keeping their defensive capabilities updated and didn't honor their NATO commitments.

@lucir1000 You would prefer the Russian history of interventions, then?

@peterbluesman As I recall, it was never a 'tough sell' to have any of the former Soviet Bloc countries shift their alliiances westward. The benefits were obvious, and none of them wanted anything to do with Russia anymore. Putin was always welcome to offer them something more attractive, but he didn't, because he couldn't. So it goes.

Was this one of the same ministers that called for Germany to shut down it's nuclear power plants? That turned out to be pretty short-sighted, didn't it?

@lucir1000 Putin is absolutely fighting Ukraine, and was the clear aggressor. That myth that somehow NATO forced him to do what he's done is complete BS. Virtually all of the former Soviet Bloc countries have shifted their alignments westward, culturally, economically and politically. Putin was always welcome to offer those countries something more attractive, be he didn't, because he can't. It isn't the fault of sovereign countries to choose to align with NATO, if that's what they want to do.

@peterbluesman Ah yes, the "This is all the West's fault" hypothesis. It as only a matter of time. 🙄
1
@peterbluesman Good one. ...but I wouldn't quite your day job.
1
@peterbluesman Huh? I made no such parallels. I never mentioned China at all.
