  1. when those people took the government buildings in Kiev, they were locals, they were not masked, not dressed in camouflage, they were not disguised, and a LOT of them were massing in the squares in Kiev. Far more than any special operations forces could muster. whereas the ones who have taken the government buildings in Crimea are all heavily masked, in uniform (without any decals)

  2. Had the citizenry shot any of these people, they would not only have been shot themselves, but the Russians would have used the pretext for escalating the conflict. The Nazis had a solution for guerrilla conflict: If a Nazi soldier got shot in a small town, that town was obliterated, all the men killed, all the women and children taken to camps.

Fawad Amin and if they are left on their own, then Russia will take the lot, then Belarus, Moldova, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Tadjikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Khazakistan and Georgia are next, then Finland, Poland and Eastern Europe. He wants to re-form the Soviet Union, taking back every piece of land that Russia once owned.

  11. John Edwards You know how much harm Ukraine can do to Russia? None at all. If the Ukrainians did ANYTHING that could be seen as provocation, Russia will invade... Whoops they already have, and Crimea fell, and Donetsk is next.

  12. Fawad Amin That would have taken VAST amounts of money. To organise a small force like those that took over the buildings in Crimea and Donetsk, only hundreds of people, is not that big a deal. But the protests in Kiev were not like that. There were hundreds of thousands. There might have been some form of western support, but there is no way that a crowd like that can be controlled by any one organisation, not like the blatant military organisation that's happening in Donetsk and Crimea.

  14. ICEN BIG problem: If the Ukrainians fight back, the Russians will simply swarm across the border on that pretence. This is a time for tactics, not for fighting, unless that fighting is of tactical advantage. Because Russia has a far, far bigger fighting force. And everybody knows it. Ukraine has absolutely no tactical advantage. No hilly terrain, hell, they don't even have the defensive advantage of defending during the winter.

Baulbustor The British are a completely different story, their system of management completely broke down because the colonists were becoming self sufficient and the British trade monopoly was severely restricting the American economy, and the colonists were not getting any advantage from the arrangement. However, in the event of an insurrection within the US's own borders, that is a different story, because the people within the US DO have a vote, and DO gain often immense benefit from the US government.

  20. Baulbustor Afghanistan is a completely different story, the US army does not even speak the same language. But if you have an insurgency within America's own borders, they KNOW them, they know the land and know the culture. Hell, they probably have active spies within many of the groups.

  22. Baulbustor except the ones with massive hoards of weapons can only fire one at a time, while there are thousands of average solders in the US military. And if one of them does get to be a problem, a predator drone with a hellfire missile can take them out. Those who have fantasies of being the ones to bring down the US government with their private arms depots are completely deluded. The government will back off until the militia members start committing atrocities, and then wipe them out.

  25. BlackLotus30 The thing about Crimea is that Putin organised it so that by the time the Ukrainians knew what was happening, he'd already won. The Ukrainians were distracted by their revolution, the rest of the world was distracted by the Sochi Olympics,  so he just sent in special forces to take it like it was a superbowl ring.

  30. nujevad28... for the most part, European colonialism has been abandoned, the only relics are the British Commonwealth and places like Australia and the Americas, where the colonialisation was so effective that everybody speaks the languages of the colonisers.  Apart from that, there are only a few rocky outcrops that still cling to the country that colonised them, mostly because they are too small and weak to be independent, and all the people there are French, British, Dutch or whatever anyway, like with the Falkland Islands or the Dutch colonies in the West Indies.
