The kinds of loans Fannie and Freddie were doing before the others got into subprime lending were not being bailed up and repackaged until the other banks started doing so and squeezed them out of their own market. Before then, Fannie and Freddie were making loans the old fashioned way, and that included checking the credentials, which the other banks were NOT DOING.  And I thought you rightwingers were nuts about deregulation. But when Clinton does it, it crashes the economy ten years later? YOU MUST BE REALLY DESPARATE TO BLAMESHIFT AWAY FROM BUSH
