  1. The American navy has fewer ships today, simply because fewer ships are necessary. Back in the early 20th century, troops had to be moved around by ships, one Boeing 747 can easily do the job of a small fleet of troop carriers. Same with reconnaisance, planes and satellites do it far more efficiently. And a large aircraft carrier can do the job of a small fleet of drednaughts and battleships.
