... and because we have free checkups, what happens? People go to the doctor for relatively minor things, and that small infection gets treated and people don't end up going to work while sick and working at half pace because their ankle hurts and they don't know why. As a result productivity goes up, by far more than the cost to the state of the medical benefits plan.

some of both... You really need to look at WHY the American postal service has been posting losses: several years ago, they were forced to pay in full for the entire healthcare and retirement costs for all employees (current and future) for the next 75 years, a requirement no private enterprise has had to deal with. If this requirement was not imposed, the USPS would still be turning a moderate profit.

private enterprise is efficient in running many kinds of enterprises. But not all. For example, publicly owned and run post offices are far cheaper and more efficient than privately owned and run courier firms.

You can see how effectively the Australian system works, no medical bankruptcies, people are getting treated instead of going to work sick or injured, small infections and small cancers are being treated before they become serious,(a friend of mine just had a melanoma cut out at a very early stage)... You might be paying for everybody else, but when it comes to being treated medically (and everybody needs medical care at one point or another), you end up paying far, far less.

so you are comparing two disasters with the US? You know, there are a LOT of success stories of nations that are far more socialist than the US, like Australia, which did not suffer from the current recession AT ALL.It is not binary, you know, not entirely socialist or entirely capitalist, there are degrees of socialism, the Soviet Union went too far one way, and the US is going far too far the other way.

the thing with medical costs, is everything has to be custom made, custom fitted, it is not like building an iphone, where they are all the same. Each patient is in actuality a separate research project, so of COURSE costs will go up as more and more becomes possible. Take a look into the costs of healthcare (public, corporate and private) and you will find that the US has the worst of both worlds. The cost of American medicare is the same per capita as Australia with relatively few covered.

it might be more efficient at making a profit, but the private model fails at exxactly the point where it is most needed, in this situation, at exactly the point where delivering to certain areas becomes unprofitable.

ok, what about Sweden? Denmark? South Korea? Japan? There are dozens of other countries that fall into the same category of comparatively socialist nations that are doing far better than the US.
1
ever compared medicare with what they have in the US? Because THERE is the other option.
1
actually, if you look at Sweden, they are NOT oil and gas rich. And while they did pull back on socialism to a degree, that was AFTER the standard of living rose to a self supporting level, i.e. the populace did not need as much propping up as it used to.

Japanese stagnation is chiefly due to its economy having expanded to its limits: Once the nation is producing at peak efficiency, it is hard to grow the economy more, particularly once there is so much infrastructure already in place, that there are literally bullet trains crisscrossing the country. Once these massive infrastructure projects are completed, they don't need to be built again. Oh, and compared to the US economy, Japan is booming.

Except you are comparing the base level of healthcare in Australia with the level of healthcare that insured Americans get. if you compare the level of healthcare that Australians without private coverage to Americans who are uninsured, you will find that your comparison breaks down. And those WITH coverage in Australia get it much cheaper, and get private coverage.
