... and if it is allowed to regulate itself, it goes in the same direction, only much, much, much faster. The regulations were MUCH tighter in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. And the economy boomed.

No, the market does not regulate efficiently. Externalities, corruption, crime, and dominant paradigms distort the market to the point where it can't function efficiently. And the Great Depression was started due to the bubble created by the completely deregulated economy of the 1920s, and it was World War II that brought the US out of it.
