Stanley Li There are various reasons for using twin turbos, turbo+supercharger etc. In the case of the Japanese twin turbos of the 90's, eg the 2JZ-GTE supra, it was done to improve low end torque and reduce lag (which is not the same thing as spool delay BTW).
But technology has moved a long since those days. My car has a fairly small single turbo, which given the 4 litre displacement and the advancements in turbo, ancillary and ECU design means it's hitting pretty much 100% torque from 2000rpm and holds the torque pretty flat right up to the read line. Like almost any turbo pedal response (which is what lag really is) is not as immediate as with a N/A, but it's pretty close to it to the point where most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Of course if you take a small displacement engine and slap an enormous single turbo on it pushing huge boost, it's pretty hard to get any kind of good low end response out of it and it will lag regardless of how well valved and gated it is - but that's where the Barra is so good - decent displacement to start off with.
Yes, they are such an underrated engine, look after it and it'll still be just as strong in another 180,000km!
