Some manufacturers ETB designs are really appallingly bad too... there is an episode of Wheeler Dealers where they have to replace a Maserati ETB and sender - the OEM units are some thousands of pounds to replace from Maserati, so they take the old units to a guy who re-engineers them for a few hundred pounds, and he explains all the design faults the original units have - using ultra cheap thin sliding contacts that wear out very quickly - he replaces the sliding contact with a magnetic contactless system that should never wear out - which is how it should have been in the first place.

Andrew Larson yes but the car will still usually run okish if the TPS is faulty on a mechanical throttle.

Andrew Larson hence okish. Regardless if you are buying a maserati you'd expect a contactless system would be used instead of cheap plated tracks.

Yes, they generally use a stepper motor.
