Well, you could say the UK is in receipt of aid from charities giving to our most poor, undernourished, marginalised citizens. I used to raise money from charitable donations for UK elderly, some of which came from abroad. Besides, if you look into it UK aid to India doesn't go to their government.

Thing is a soldiers cost a lot so govts reduce them. Then when needed find out we haven't enough. Conflict is changing though and maybe we do't need so many boots on the ground in a war yet with Brexit and Covid and floods we've seen where else a lot of trained people can be needed.

@johnallen7807 So why don't governments look after ther own citizens before donating money to other countries?
2
@sshep86 A lot of UK MPs recently voted against feeding hungry children.

Every military misspends. The three arms are always competing for the very latest bit of kit. Planning for the next war isn't an exact science either. I wouldn't know how to defend the nation within a budget. I'd always want more destroyers, planes, gadgets and highly trained people to employ them.

@davidcunningham407 I initially thought that but I'd need some concrete proof.

@davidcunningham407 many thanks

@johnallen7807 So if you don't understand how can you be sure you're for or against it? "Virtue signal" is one of those meaningless, nonsense terms.
1
@johnallen7807 I'm asking you why do you think governments give aid to other countries. Governments of all political persuasions continue to do it. You think it's just to 'look good' or get votes?
1
@johnallen7807 If he did vote remain it's because he can add up.
1
@johnallen7807 Well there you go: aid should go where it's needed. How much do you think a charity CEO should earn? Less than other comparative CEO's? Why?
1
@johnallen7807 The 'charity' part is that people give their money freely end and the charity distributes it. Some very large charities have a CEO who is responsible for hundreds of millions; you don't want someone bad in charge hence you pay market value for someone with skills, expertise, experience for that role. The greater number of charities have smaller turnovers and don't need someone so well qualified. The Oxfam guy was a bad apple, he's not representative. Charities are not an arm of government. Neither are NGOs - clues in the name.
1
@johnallen7807 No, it does not follow. Besides, governements can change every 5 years so policies change. Do you work for free? Why should others - charities employ professional people. It's laudable that some can volunteer their time, not all can. Your reasoning is off, your arguments are misleading.

@sshep86 It was reversed as they saw voter outrage, but they did vote not to keep feeding children. We are a rich naton, the UK should not have such levels of uinequality. Neither should India. Govt priorities in both nations should reflect this. Unfortunately, voters can be dim and vote for bad govts. Education is key... and fewer self-serving owners of news media spouting lies.
1
@johnallen7807 You are beyond reason, a troll. I have refuted what passes as 'arguments'. Probably see conspiracies eveywhere. Bye.
1
@TheRealBleach You'll never manage to convince some on here with facts; they deny them and invent their own. India is a particular target as they may be moving towards Nato alignment. 'They' don't like Nato or any international co-operation or facts.

Alfreds Pariah What rubbish.

@shootmcrunfast They voted not to provide free meals for children who otherwise would've been at school and received free meals. Two million children rely on free school meals in the UK. MP's voted 322 - 261 to not extend the free meal scheme to Easter '21. In work families get extra benefits to make up for low wages. Universal Credit has been nightmarish for many, people have died from illness waiting for their ESA benefit. The UK is moving further away from being an equitable society. I want to be proud that where I live is more fair and just, yet it's getting worse and a lot of the press want to blame foreigners, despite the myriad of stats that describe (in detail) that immigrants are a net benefit to the economy and do the jobs a lot of us won't. Go to any hospital, see who's working there. I know quite a few ppl who have left the UK because of the way it's going; I used to think they ought to have stayed here to make it better. I now wonder if I should've gone with them.

@shootmcrunfast Why should I apologise if you think I'm getting emotional about a decision to suspend free meals to children that qualified for them? When the facts support it you should get emotional! I've given you facts. If you follow the issue you've heard what Conservative MPs have said: the vouchers sold for drugs, the food parcels sold for drugs. Ben Bradley has a habit of vilifying the poor, calling them "wasters", suggesting vasectomies. He apologised but later suggested police brutality should be encouraged. He abuses the system, misused taxpayers money and repeatedly makes wild lies. He increased his majority at the last election. He's not alone. What argument did I lose? That India has hungrier kids that us? Of course they do, poverty is far worse there. But for a wealthy nation to have our levels of poverty, especially in-work poverty, is immoral. And yes, I have lived under the poverty line. Not that that should make any difference.
