How can we have Taiwan join anything when we officially don’t recognise Taiwan as a country. Officially, as far as Australia is concerned, Taiwan is a province of China.

@lennifrost2006 Yeah but when we have relations with Taiwan. We do it through Beijing. That’s a fact. Taiwan only has 5 of the 8 criteria that makes a nation independent.

@lennifrost2006 You know why it’s called Taipei and not Taiwan. Cause we don’t officially use Taiwan and the Glorified ‘Taipei’ post office isn’t recognised in any official capacity. It just a means to an end. It’s not a consulate or an embassy.

Countries that recognise Taiwan as an independent nation: Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, Holy See, Honduras, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Nicaragua, Palau, Paraguay, St Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Swaziland and Tuvalu. Not Australia.

@lennifrost2006 Yeah recognising the ROC is recognising Taiwan. Recognising the PRC (which is what we do) is recognising Taiwan as part of China.

@lennifrost2006 There is no legislation that recognises Taiwan. In fact we recognise the PRC as the official government of China and internationally we refer to them as Chinese Taipei. That’s Beijing
