I don't think this narrative is entirely true. It's an attempt to remove culpability from Putin, to say "Putin was only defending himself!!!" What's happening is the ongoing battle for energy for Europe. Ukraine was a complete backwater till a huge supply of natural gas was discovered. If Ukraine was allied with the west, it could do a lot to make Europe energy independent. But Russia does NOT want an energy independent Europe. THIS is the key point. Putin doesn't want a Europe that is energy independent.
