  1. Fraser Nelson on The Spectator comes across as scientifically naive - there were no 'shockwaves' following the Imperial report. You would not expect tranmission to decrease quickly in the early days of 'lockdown' (if you can call it that). It is only now (in February) that you can see the full effect of lockdown with infection rates (and the Ro rate) coming down sharply. This lockdown is necessary to allow ICU and other medics to deal with the increase of severe illnesses. A lockdown (whetehr a 'stay at home' plea or mandatory requirement) is a temporary measure: the UK will not be able to go back to some normality under vaccines take their effect and international borders are fully but temporarily closed to all but essential workers. It is quite possible that there could be another 120,000 deaths by June (1000 average daily deaths x 4 months = 120,000) without social distancing.
