In 1700, the Japanese owned various locations on the Siberian coast, al, the islands up to Kamchatka and all of Sakhalin. Slowly Imperial Rusxia slowly pushed the Japanese out. Taking the islands south of Kamchatka towards Hokkaido, and by 1874 only two islands near Hokkaido and half of Sakhalin. A treaty was made by the Meiji and Czar which gave up the last half of Sakhalin in order to preserve the last islands near Hokkaido and Hokkaido itself. It is interesting, Japan only took back the half os Sakhalin they gave up in 1874. So this video seems to miss that Japan's northern most Daimyo could have played a role there.
