Hitler needed to be defeated; however, technically the US had been taking actions that were acts of war against Germany. US warships were attacking German U-Boats and escorting ships. This provision of aid and refusal to recognize the blockade of Great Britain; while the US recognized and honored the Blocksde of Germany. So, Hitler had to consider the US a potential future enemy; just as any sane person recognized Germany as a threat to the US.

@JamesRichards-mj9kw Who was the right one then?

@JamesRichards-mj9kw We can agree to disagree, both were threats, with the more immediate one Germany. The question of how much aid we provided the Soviet Union can be readily debated. I feel that the aid should have been minimal at best. The Soviet Union continued to trade with Japan throughout much of the Pacific War, interned US aircrew and aircraft, and constantly demanded more ground war in Western Europe.

@JamesRichards-mj9kw Since this is a free country, believe what you like. I prefer reality.

@JamesRichards-mj9kw While agree communism is every bit as obscene as Nazi Germany; no sane person can support Hitler and the totalitarian and racist government that he created. The Nazi technological development was far more advanced than the Soviet Union, and therefore was the greater danger. Sans Hitler and the Nazis you could have a point; however, that point is invalid with them in the mix. As I said, you are entitled to your opinion,.

user-wj6dt5bq3w I agree that during the war Germany had not developed a clear threat to the US mainland; but Germany (if successful in controlling Europe had the industrial strength and technological ability to threatsn the US mainland. The disruptive affects of th e bombing campaigns waged against Germany disrupted the German ability to make that threat more than just potential.

The problem with your reality is that at the moment in time when the US first was involved in the European theater of war; the immediate danger wasn't the Soviet Union. Were we in the long term aiding a potentially worse opponent, yes; but you have to look at it in terms of what was happening then.
