Both the Pilgrims and the Jamestown Colonists used equity for their first year, with people who were inept or lazy farmers or spent too little time producing food and more searching for riches. Both colonies nearly failed that first year! The Pilgrims moved away from equity to allowing people to keep what they grew. In Jamestown, it was expressed as "He who does notd work shall not eat". In simple terms, the moved from equity to individual rights and equality under God.
