  1. From the Flying pancake, an experimental naval fighter around the beginning of WWII which was a disk shaped aircraft with the flattened outer edges as wings. German WWII work on a flying saucer shaped flying machine. After WWII, the US and Canadians worked on a saucer which actually got off the ground. It wasn't flyable because it wasn't analog controllable. We are in the digital age today; so with modern computer tech would make them more feasible. So, very possibly, a secret US project based on those earlier experiments.
