I arrived in Australia as a twenty year old in 1970 during the middle of the Vietnam War and conscription for young men of my age. I had to go through the selection, 'ballot', but my number didn't come up. At that time, young men were volunteering for national service, but that enthusiasm soon disapated. Even I wanted to volunteer, but (it sounds odd) my Dad wouldn't let me (under 21 required parental permission). I don't think you'll get much enthusiasm now.

@Ironwulf2000 My generation was brought up by parents who had been involved in World War 2 and we had been exposed to the glorification of war through many war films of the fifties and sixties. Unfortunately, this blinded us to the corruption of US and South Vietnamese governments involved in the war in Vietnam. I joined a reserve army unit with the thought of volunteering when I was 21, but after a couple of years, it was becoming obvious what the outcome was going to be.
