I remembre reading somewhere that Gamma Ray Bursts spread out from their origin and span outwards to Many Light Years in Width, So one could imagine them shaped not like a Narrow Pencil but like a Wide Arc of a Japanese Paper Fan. This is the reason they are so deadly. They don't even have to be precisely aimed at Earth but in the General direction of our Solar system. Also, Gamma Ray Bursts do not occur just during a Hypernovae Incident, They can also occur when Black Holes devour Stars, And this process can take Thousands of years. So thry can be a continious stream of Particles, Not an Isolated event.
