Of course Ancient Hindus ate Meat & Fish. Meat was restricted to only Brahmins. Nowhere in Hindu Texts does it say Meat is impure or restricted. It only forbids Beef (Cow meat), Ban on Meat does not come from Hindu belief, It originates from Buddhism. Over time, Buddhist belief was enforced on Whole of India by Tyrant king - Ashoka. There is a famous story of how a Kuruba (Forest Tribal) offered Shiva Deer meat and Shiva accepts it, Even though offering Animal flesh to Gods is forbidden. But the Tribal was ignorant so Shiva forgives him and accepted his offering. The Heroes of Mahabharat - The Entire Pandava and Kaurava lienage is descended from Satyavati (Fisherman's daughter).
