@ange6580 There will always be those who hope to retain an idealized period of their youth. We tend to see the past through rose-colored lenses. Younger generations are able to see the past without emotional attachments, relying on historical facts instead. Still, real change is excruciatingly incremental.

@ange6580 Most people want the same things but have vastly different ideas how to get them. Which, in the US, leads back to how we choose the governments we hope will help us achieve these imagined outcomes. Many in this world have little say about their governance and I am very glad I live in a place where I do, albeit a small one. The one thing I will never understand is when fear drives some to seek authoritarianism. They can always see themselves under the care of such regimes, but cannot envision themselves rejected or trampled by them.

@ange6580 Yeah, I see Russia as an example that authoritarianism which the people can't be free from. It can do basic functions such as food and shelter, but you certainly don't want to cross the government. Russia's government is an example of what I do not want for the US. The fact that some here can see authoritarianism as a viable option for the US is mind-boggling considering that there are not starving masses, nor anything near untenable lives. We have more than many in this world can imagine and yet some still complain. Can we make things better here? Certainly, but we seem to make one step forward and one back. Outfits like Fox do more harm than good.

@ange6580 Trump is not an honest Republican in any sense of the word. It is unfortunate that the others know they must follow him now or be left in the dust. The most shocking part of the Trump presidency to most Americans I know was his determined effort to retain power and the fact that he had all the powers of the presidency behind him. It was as near a crisis which any of us could ever imagine. None of our past presidents had ever done that. Peaceful transition of power is of such resolute import that I am discouraged that his party allows him to run again. I have known of his terrible flaws since the 1980s and was pretty horrified to see him elected, and rightfully so.
