  1. Interesting to hear your take on the topic. I do agree, Rome held back Europe for a long time, and we tend to idealize it when in fact it invented very little on its own (mostly it innovated pre-existing technologies). The "Fall" of Rome is the best event in technological history, as weird as it sounds.

  2. If the French Revolution never happened France would remain a monarchy and power would rest with the existing elites. There's a theory that the Revolution was just two groups vying for power (the rising upper middle class against the pre-established order), and thus we would expect the middle class remain oppressed. Also, what are you thinking in terms of Point of Divergence? Do the French not help the Americans and they remain colonies? It all boils down to the POD as well.

I'm not sure, though, that the death of one man (however beloved he may be to the public) would convince Americans to potentially endure massive death and destruction in a foreign war decades down the road. In the long run, I doubt it would stir their mind nearly as much as Pearl Harbor.

  4. What POD are you thinking of? Perhaps communist Germans support White Russians over Bolsheviks, seeing themselves as the original progenitors of communism, and thus inherently superior?
