  1. So basically a higher temperature at the other side of the evaporative coil opens the valve and a cooler temperature closes it. The goal is to keep the refrigerant a gas for the compressor to compress (liquids don't compress) and to keep the system from freezing in an ac unit. So in adjusting tightening the spring lets less refrigerant in thus increasing exit temperature and loosening decreases exit temperature.
