  1. I used to run gentoo. Having my system be down or partially down after an update was a common occurrence for me. 100% open source, any updates can fail for any number of reasons.

  2. Which is funny considering history. Mac OS is Unix, which was the business OS. Windows was just a toy. Things changed quickly though.
