Because it provides the water supply to Crimea, and the short-term flooding would only affect the southern bank, (the north is much higher), and that's where the Russian defence lines are. It's a war crime, too, to blow up dams, but that means nothing to the Russians.

@Gorboduc Why would they destroy their own infrastructure? The hydro plant is going to be an important power source when the war is over, and they'll want the water supply once Crimea is lberated. In the context of the war, though, the dam is a critical crossing point. Why would you blow up a crossing over a river when getting over that river is a critical part of the next phase of the military operations? The water supply to Crimea can be closed off just by shutting a sluice gate.

They must be so proud of all their advances in the last 6 months. So proud. I mean, Pisky is obviously the most important place in all of Ukraine, right? Well worth the 3 month seige and thousands of lost lives......and completely justifies voluntarily giving up Kharkiv and Kherson.

That's a bizarre piece of thinking. Isolating Crimea from the north and south will lead to enormous pressure on Putin from within Russia, and will lead to the collapse of the Russian invasion SW of Donbas. As soon as he starts losing Crimea, Putin will be out of power, and the war will end.

@peterlearner8594 I disagree. I don't see Zap having any fundamental role other than being part of the isolation of Crimea. If Crimea falls, the war ends there and then as the Russian state will tear itself to pieces. There will be absolutely no need to fight for Donbas or Zaphorizhia and the idea that Ukraine will be forced to cede Crimea is just fantasy, no matter what order territory is recovered.

@peterlearner8594 Yes, it's clear we agree on the majority of this. Our difference is only over western pressure to cede territory. Fingers crossed, but it should be an interesting few months.

@peterlearner8594 I think Zap would be easier for Russia to hold than Crimea, once Kherson has collapsed. Also, that Tokmak is a lot more important than people think. If the Ukrainians can take that, then they have fire control over all of the routes west from Mariupol, and further, they can cut off any troops fleeing Kherson. Obviously, the railway through Tokmak would also cease to function. Take Tokmak, bulge the salient to something defendable, and that's probably all they'll need to do in Zap.
