Why would they want to keep Kherson, you ask? Well, because the loss of the whole of Kherson means Crimea is isolated. Crimea is the jewel in the crown of stolen land for Russia, and having that come under pressure would signal the ends of the war, and the end of Putin.

@diligentone-six2688 He is a tyrant, but he isn't a theocrat. And I did say "the end of Putin". I didn't say the end of his regime. I didn't claim that it would sweep out autocracy or bring in a benevolent liberal democracy. I'll say it again: lose Crimea, and that's the end of Putin. If you disagree with that prediction, you'll probably need to explain how he could survive that catastrophe. Starting a war which ends up with you in a worse position than before you started is unsurvivable in any country I can think of.

@Swarmpope You think so? I'm not so sure, as that would allow Ukraine a route in behind the current front line by attacking behind Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk.
