I'm not fan of religions in general and Islam in particular but this regime is extremely unpopular and needs to keep the support of the fringe religious fundamentalists and those are very unhappy after the spanking Israel gave to the regime and it's terrorist allies. The reason has a lot more to do with a banana regime trying to hold onto power than religious precepts.
