  1. france was always a big market for diesel because of the tax advantage, whem tdi started making as much power as gas engine if nit more, plus lot of torque and high mpg. plus german diesel from VW, MB and BMW had great reputation for performamce, efficiency and reliability. plus emission tax that put diesel at am advantage due to lowee CO2 qnd raising gas prices. uaed german diesil sly rocketed amd diesel arted to become the biggest sellers. the market got out if hand with dieaelm 50 % diesl in 2000 amd up to 77% in 2008. delaers didmt have gas car in inventory due to low demand and basically 100% of the family cars where diesel and wven a majority of small city cars where diesel evem though they only drove shoet trips amd the diesel engines were not evem getting up to temperature anf particle filters getting clogged in traffic. wvemtually miat if the gas savings were megatwd by upfront cost amd more expensive maintenance
