  1. FOr most people it takes more than a mile elevation for any serious altitude sickness to manifest, and for many it peaks on the second day. When I moved to Taos, NM from VA in 2006, this was the case for me. I was buying a few household goods in Walmart when I suffered a near whiteout for a few minutes and had to get a cab back to my place. Taos is just under 7000 feet most places. Arriving a couple hours before a debate would be generally a sound strategy, but of course everyone is different.
