Polygamy as commonly practiced is incredibly abusive to women, while polyandry (one woman married multiple men) can be empowering to both men and women. As practiced in the Himalayan fringelands, it has been a method of keeping land from being subdivided in meaninglessness. A Tibetan -stock woman marries a man, and she also marries all his brothers (if any), and this prevents the dowry -LAND - from being divided up among all the brothers and their brides. In this system the dowry is held in common by the bride, her husband and all his brothers. If it were the other way around the land would keep being divided up until no one had enough land to work for a living.
