The other odd thing about this holiday is that until 1994, Australia Day was always celebrated on the last Monday of January, as close as possible to 26 January, so we could all have a long weekend, whether it was 26 January or not! But the government of Paul Keating changed it so that as of 1994, Australia Day was celebrated on the actual day of 26 January with a public holiday no matter what day it fell on as it was deemed a significant enough date in this nation’s history that we should all commemorate it on the day, even if it fell on a weekend as it does this year. Blame Paul Keating and the Australian Labor party for the mess. Many leftists protested for BLM when police departments are run by Democrats while being pro-Democrat voters.

@asiimwecorstorphan5541 As a national public holiday, May 8 is close to Anzac Day's 25th of April. TAS and QLD have 2nd of May state public holiday (Labor day). Labor Day (or any non-date sensitive federal/state public holiday) could be transferred to the last Monday of January and set 8th of May as Australian Commonwealth Day.

What's needed is business schools that can teach entrepreneurship i.e. teach them how to fish instead of giving them fish. Forever welfare does NOT help the half a million Aboriginal population. The problem, Australia has a weak manufacturing base to transition the unemployed into low-skill jobs and then into high jobs. This is a national issue and not limited to the Aborigines. Australia follows the WTO rules that discourage consumer product manufacturing to be funded by the government. WTO rules allow cultural-related and national security-related government funding. Australia doesn't have China's WTO entry with a promise clause loophole. From my POV, I'll re-reclassify some areas as "developing" to get around the WTO rules.
